Bs2002 Microbiology B
Bs2003 Biochem II B-

Electives: (GERPE and UE)
MA8103 Human Resource Management (HRM) (BM) P
BS8003 Science or fiction? - biology in popular media (Biofic) A+
My only disappointment is in my biochemistry, but i also know my studies in 2003 were of lower standard than what i put in for the rest ... so... what will be will be.
Module review in detail below: (CLICK READ MORE)
* BS8003 SCIENCE OR FICTION? - BIOLOGY IN POPULAR MEDIA
A+ UE
3(?) hour lectures, a midterm quiz (implemented this year), and finals (100% MCQ, a few multi-answer MCQ)
I think it's a STS for non-SBS students, and SBS students can take it as a UE.
For those of you who are science / reasonably strong in science, take this to get good grades and pull up your GPA.
Very interesting mod. The main prof is very good and able to clearly link the movies to the science behind/the non-science, and it's a lot of fun knowing how much BS there is in so many shows. (Especially CSI). Two chapters are taught by another prof... who is not so good at teaching so i think many non-science friends of mine also died at his chapters. But other than that, i had a HSS friend who did reasonably okay in this mod.
BS2003 BIOCHEMISTRY II
Usual lectures, no midterms, 4 lab sessions,
Mainly by the 2 Grueber/gruber profs (I'm in love w the female one)
Pay attention to key points the profs emphasize on, and for tutorials, find the Prof's class. I think we benefit most from the prof's class as she/he also points out key things that do come out in tutorial/questions.
*OMG - pls go through your tutorials too before finals - a question that was covered in the earlier tutorials came out - it's the kind of question where you COULD get the answer by calculation but using the cheat he tells you about in class saves your time by a million times.
Seriously.
BS2002 MICROBIOLOGY
Usual lectures, one midterm, finals (MCQ)
Hmm microbiology is the same old same old biology stuff.
Kim Kline is a good lecturer. Oh, and if Rice is lecturing, be warned that the recording may not be clear/loud - so go for his lectures. (he drops his mic. a lot.)
Nothing much to say,
BS0001 BIOLOGY AND SOCIETY 3 B+
Lectures, varied profs, no midterms, one finals (MCQ)
This mod is overall IC by Prof Kenneth Yu if i'm not wrong. Last lecture, he'll help go through and pinpoint key areas to study.
Interesting module, literally covers everything and anything though. Good and bad. Bad in terms of - no link between each topic so slightly harder to study for. Covers various topics from Sungei Buloh, to Combat health, to Forensic sciences, to Dementia etc. yup. Veryyy diverse.
HW0128 SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION I 2 A GER
Weekly tutorial session, buy the book, 3 assignments
I got assigned the course coordinator. I felt rather lucky to have him, a more interesting and (lax?) tutor in charge than one more strict and boring. And he taught well too. Hope to get him next sem but eh, chances low.
Assginmt 1 - biblio (indiv)
Assgnmt 2 - review paper (pair work)
Assignmt 3 - presentation (indiv)
SBS sci comm is diff from engin comm, or at least for this SciComm I that i took. Maybe Sci Comm II will be more tedious.
MA8103 HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT 3 S BM
PLEASE NOTE: THE MODULE HAS CHANGED SINCE I TOOK IT (read below for details)
Lectures, Midterm, Assignment, Written Finals
Lecturer is ... naggy, but still a good lecturer. Interesting. But he repeats some points many many times (reiterating the same thing over and over ... )(which is kind of like hints) EDIT: I was informed that it is no longer the same lecturer now
Midterms is MCQ but it literally is a joke because he gave us so much leeway. You literally can put 2 choices in your single answer MCQ so essentially even if you guess anyhow, you'll probably score the right answer.
Got A for the assignment.
Assignment: Was supposed to come up with a HRP for any company of your choosing. I'm not too sure how strict he was nor what he based on to mark. Didn't expect an A. Was expecting B or smth. Just don't slack off and refer a lot then it'll probably be fine.
SU ed this because... didn't study much for the finals, and didn't think i wrote much key points in the finals. It was...a indecisive SU, cos who knows, maybe it'd have been like the assignment - a surprise A. but nah. didn't leave to chance. Feel free to email for what notes I have left or my assignment.
NOTICE ON CHANGES:
These are gathered from what others who have taken the mod in the more recent semesters:
1) Apparently changed prof (unconfirmed)
2) There's now a group presentation component. Uncertain if still have written report assignment to do.
3) there used to be pyp (past student version) sold in NS printing shop but apparently no more. Person who bought my pyp informed me of that. Didn't personally check. Maybe cos content may have changed slightly.
Cheers.
Hey J.T. I'm taking MA8103 I'm wondering if you have any compiled notes? The lecture slides are so long and I have no idea what the point of the lectures are. You're right, he's so naggy. Anyway, lmk! cchiew001@e.ntu.edu.sg
ReplyDeleteHey, i don't exactly have very concise summary of notes, (most that i have are handwritten) but i do have a document i made for my last week of revision - it's not very complete tho. Link to doc below:

Hi J.T.! I'm also taking MA8103 and I'm wondering if there is any way to contact you to ask you more about finals and how to go about the assignment. Lmk soon! Thanks!! (i'm rather lost for this mod :( )
ReplyDeleteHey! actually just find me at jtoh023@e.ntu.edu.sg and look at the link i posted before https://www.dropbox.com/s/md1eb8c449698j8/brief%20HRM%20notes%20impt%20points.docx?dl=0

ReplyDeleteHi a graded mod! Haven't had time to change the words there it was copied from my transcript. 2 represents the AUs. All "__ communication " mods are usually graded.
Deletehi do you have notes for bs0001? Seems like an interesting od to clear for LA but my last bio knowledge was in sec 2 haha
ReplyDeleteHi :) sure you can email me at jtoh023@ntu.edu.sg and I can pass you some of the notes.
DeleteAnd it doesn't really use your old bio knowledge so no worries - its really interesting and diverse.
Hi. Im interested in taking BS0001 too and wonder if attendance is compulsory. Also, is the course assessment 100% MCQ?
DeleteHi! I'm thinking of taking BS0001 but I'm definitely not a Science person even though I did take Bio up till 'O' levels... I was wondering it the course is very technical in the science aspects or?? cause based on the course description it doesnt seem to be very science-y and more kinda sorta 'sociology'?
ReplyDeleteHi there. Well Bs0001 is sciencey - but not the kind that requires a lot of prior Biology knowledge, and should be fine for you. It has a very diverse and varied content, but a lot of things are "new" info that's not focused on in normal science mods. E.g. Sungeibuloh ecosystem, or Forensic techniques, or Why people get diabetes, or heat stroke.
DeleteI'm not too sure what is considered as sociology haha, but it is more of "this sciencey thing from a thing in normal life/society" rather than sciencey-science. :)
If you need some notes or anything , I can dig up old files for you.
Thanks so much for the clarification and yeah it would be greatly appreciated if you could send me some notes!! My email's JCHEW020@e.ntu.edu.sg thanks so much in advance!!!
Deletehello! i got MA8103 during this add/drop period but am still wondering if i should take it. is it a lot of memory work or is it more of a common sense thing or do you need to put in a lot of time on this? also are there many new/bussiness-y terms and concepts? im going to s/u this btw!! just wondering about the workload and syllabus and if its more worth it to wait till next sem for a more interesting mod. would appreciate so much if you could give me a little insight to this mod!!
ReplyDeleteHi. Just a disclaimer, the prof had apparently been changed, but assuming the content and style have not changed that much - the content is not really heavy and yes, a lot is common sense just given concise points/reasonings. It is rather interesting and good mod for me esp since i come from science and have no biz knowledge.
Deleteworkload is light, no tutorial, just the one assignment midterm but i mainly made sure i fulfilled the things he emphasized on.
Disclaimer really - all this is based on the time i took the mod, which may be wholly different now.
Hey, I'm taking BS2002 this semester, and am a little worried. I would be extremely and unendingly grateful if you have any tips or notes to share! So sorry for the trouble!
ReplyDeleteif you want my year notes, you can send me an email at jtoh023@e.ntu.edu.sg
DeleteAre you a student in SBS? (Just checking as quite a few sbs mods are also offered as GERPE/UE) I'd say bs2002 is an average mod in SBS? its not one of the killer mods. :)
Hi, I am intended to take MA8103 next semester. What kind of assignment did you do (presentation/report/review ?)
ReplyDeleteDo you mind to send your past MA8103 notes? my email is muhammad367@e.ntu.edu.sg (i will contact you through email later :) )
Thanks!!!
hello! are there any presentations for MA8103 HRM?
ReplyDeletehello sorry for the late reply but there apparently is group presentation required now. I am not sure but that's what i heard vaguely from others. you might want to try emailing the prof maybe. cheers
DeleteHi, I currently taking BS0001.Can you share with me like what should I study for the test(Im going to take mid-term test in two weeks time). Btw where can I have access to those past year questions, looks like there's few people taking this course. I will be very much appreciated if you can reply me !! :)
ReplyDeleteHi JT! I would like to seek your permission to repost some of your reviews (with credits given) on my website at https://www.nanyangmods.com/ You can contact me at owner@nanyangmods.com if you would like to discuss further :)
