Modules taken Ay2Sem2 ('16/17):
BS2004 - MCB II
BS2007 - Immuno
BS2012 - Genetics and Genomics (under new profs from diff previous years)
BS2008 - EMCB
HW0228 - Scientific Communication II
Elective:
AAA18e - DRAWING (NIE)
This sem had too many written assignments, practically every week had a written assignment due during the second half.
(details under read more)
UPDATE FROM AY3S1: content from bs2004 proves to be very very useful foundation for many future mods. - like PTM and apoptosis.
As usual, I put the more "interesting" reviews first:
AAA18e - DRAWING (NIE mod) (A+)
UE - 3AU (Was under Tricia Low)
> Very recommended even if you really are someone who has never drawn or says they can't draw. Really. 99% are people who have no drawing exp other than stickmen.
Weekly 3 hour session at NIE, class of around 15 people to one NIE instructor. 6 in-class assignments. 1 written reflection. NO finals.
The 6 in-class assignments are part of what you complete in class every week, that contributes to your grade. There is rarely any "homework" you have to bring back - you really go to class, draw there, and finish with whatever you've accomplished in that day's class.
Very good patient and clear teacher, really will pay attention to every student. Ask her questions. It will be detrimental to you if you just keep quiet and end up doing something wrong/mistaken.
Written reflection is easy to hit word count - TIP: just keep notes of what you did each class, then compile for the reflection.
Requirements: Buy your own materials. She also has some materials for you to buy from her but, it's cheaper to source for your own around/ask seniors or friends who have taken the mod before.
BS2004 - MCB II
Same ol', same ol'
(AProf Koh is good.)
BS2007 - Immuno
The quiz was killer.
Drawing out diagrams to link is very impt. A lot of things keep being linked back to each other, so it'll get messy but it helps.
Search on youtube too, there are a few good channels that help to re-explain if you don't understand some things. (e.g. when Klaus is talking and you leave the lect with confusion only.) (Klaus reappears in Stem btw)
BS2012 - Genetics and Genomics (under new profs from diff previous years)
New profs in charge of the module, noticed big differences to pyps in terms of content
2 written assignments, a mid term (MCQ + some written/calculations) and MCQ finals.
The prof stated we did "badly" for the midterms, but really don't know how "badly" we did because I felt I did okay? Umcertain. Finals was alright.
BS2008 - EMCB
Under Prof K Yu again.
Those who have done BS1001 (the lab mod) will find a lot of the lab practicals very familiar.
Kinda fun in a way - lab without stress.
HW0228 - Scientific Communication II
Under a new prof. Have to buy a book as usual.
This time we had to come up, conduct and write up a complete report for a research project of our own within the short time given to us before the deadline.
We initially had a separate idea, but had to switch to our final project because our prof felt that we should do a topic more related to our course (SBS).
The report was a nightmare and I know too much about formatting and key points in writing reports and referencing than I ever thought possible.

Hi there! I came across your blog while researching on AAA18E Drawing module as I'm planning to take it next sem, is it possible if you could help me by looking at your reflection before i decide to take it so i can have a rough idea whether I'm keen? :) Your help will be very much appreciated! Thank you !!
ReplyDeletehi, sorry for the late reply. my reflection is honestly just like a after-lesson diary/recap. if you really want to, just drop me an email at jtoh023@e.ntu.edu.sg
DeleteHello! I'm a Y2 SBS student and I'm having problems deciding which Major-PEs to take. I wanted to ask, was Genetics and Genomics was similar to Principles of Genetics in terms of understanding and difficulty? And I know you didn't take Microbial Biotechnology, but have you heard anything about it? Thanks!
ReplyDeletegenetics and genomics covers a different area from 1006, from what i rmb of 1006. 2012 covers less molecular and more on the phenotypic genotypic level, variance and mapping all that. so its hard to compare. but i'd say 2012 not that tough, similar to 1006.
Deleteand sorry don't know much about biotech.
Hi there! I'm a y2 sbs student who's undecided on immuno or g&g. I sat through the first lecture of g&g, and it was really bad in my opinion. Just wanted to ask for your opinion as to which major PE is more worth taking? Love your reviews btw!
ReplyDeleteHi, do u mind sending me your bs2004,2012,2007 notes for me to consider the courses? I will appreciate it a lot. Thank you.
